There’s a scene in Saltburn, the dark 2023 film directed by Oscar-winning Emerald Fennell that involves a very nude man dancing in one, unedited shot, through an old mansion to the upbeat 2001 song “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
It’s a confusing, dark, yet oddly joyous moment for the audience.
What’s not confusing is the song is Y2K pop dynamite.
The song, co-written by Ellis-Bextor and Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals, was a smash hit right away.
The tune went Top 10 all around the world and the album, her debut, Read My Lips, went double platinum in Britain.
