On This Day in 1980 the Stray Cats Recorded “Stray Cat Strut”

In 1980 nobody, particularly record labels gathered around their meeting rooms and said, “you know what we need? We need a trio of scrawny tattooed throwbacks. One guy on a stand-up bass, the standing drummer beating on a snare and a cymbal, and a slick backed singer who looks like the dad of the frontman of Green Day.”

The closest thing to 1950s nostalgia in 1980 pop culture was “Happy Days” on ABC which was still drawing viewers in its eight season, but it had literally jumped the shark in ’77.
