Stevie Ray Vaughan, the guitar hero from Dallas, Texas, kicked off his epic Live Alive Tour on November 22nd, 1986 in Maryland.
Vaughan and his band Double Trouble would go on to play 215 gigs for the tour which was supporting their live double album of the same name.
Even though it had been three years since their debut album, Texas Flood, had been released, this tour was going to be an extremely new experience for the guitar virtuoso, bassist Tommy Shannon, drummer Chris Layton and keyboardist Reese Wynans: it was going to be done while sober.
Vaughan, like many rock stars got into drugs and alcohol early, and in the fall of ’86, while wrapping up the Soul to Soul tour in Europe, the flamboyant guitar slinger was downing a bottle of whiskey and inhaling an ounce of nose candy, according to the biography Stevie Ray Vaughan – Day by Day, Night After Night: His Final Years, 1983–1990.
