Gorillaz headlined the largest concert of their 28-year career on Saturday (6/20), packing north London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with animated films, classical Indian musicians, rappers, and rockers drawn from nearly every era of the group’s career.
The sold-out gig attracting over 60,000 fans was Gorillaz’s first headline stadium show and the centerpiece of The Mountain Tour, supporting the British group’s ninth studio album.
To peak in popularity this late into the game says something about both the creative prowess of its architect, Damon Albarn, as well as The Mountain album itself. This was not just a nostalgia trip in an enormous venue.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a relatively new venue that opened in 2019 as the replacement for White Hart Lane the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The modern retractable soccer pitch can be moved beneath the stadium to expose a separate artificial surface designed for concerts, events and even NFL games, allowing a standing audience to occupy the field without hurting the manicured grass.
