The Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense” hit theaters for the first time today, October 19, 1984 to rave reviews – rare for movies about rock shows.
But as you probably know this was no typical concert or documentary, thanks, in part to David Byrne and his quirky vision to turn the rock show on its ear, and director Jonathan Demme’s unique approach to capturing the performance.
Unlike most concert movies, Demme’s smooth camera moves and unconventional editing compliment the subdued color palette of the costumes and intentionally unfinished production on the stage.
Take for example “Thank You For Sending Me An Angel” from their second album More Songs About Buildings and Food, it’s two simple shots. The first gives us a look at something an audience member could never do — circle around drummer Chris Franz and his drum kit.
