Music lost a giant when Robbie Robertson passed away last week at 80 years old.
Not only was he Bob Dylan’s lead guitar player when the Bard chose to go electric, but Dylan hired Robertson’s entire band to back him. After Dylan, the fans, and the neighbors nicknamed the group “The Band,” it stuck.
Besides being there for Dylan during his most controversial era, a vital transition for all of rock n’ roll, The Band just happened to reel off a series of hits that set them apart from the field.
“Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “The Shape I’m In” and “It Makes No Difference,” were soulful, earnest slow-motion journeys you could just as easily sing around a campfire as perform to audiences of tens of thousands.
