Dead and Company featuring John Mayer and several of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead ended their long strange trip in San Francisco last weekend at the home of the SF Giants with dancing, extended jams, and a drone show that probably made a few wonder if they had accidentally eaten the orange sunshine.
The Grateful Dead first began playing live in 1965 as the Warlocks. Their popularity and dedicated fanbase has kept their scene rolling through lineup changes, untimely deaths, and resisting the finicky trends in popular music.
For example, when other acts in the 1980s cut videos for its singles, the Dead turned their backs on both singles and videos. Their shows still sold out.
Ironically in 1987 when the band finally gave in and produced a video for “Touch of Grey,” the single skyrocketed to the Billboard Top 10 and was #1 on the Modern Rock chart.
The Dead on MTV? It was the first time they’d ever had that sort of success.
