One of the most infamous, legendary, and surprisingly small rock clubs on the Sunset Strip of West Hollywood is The Viper Room, which sadly might soon face the wrecking ball.
Just east on Sunset Blvd of The Whisky, The Roxy, and The Rainbow, the structure that has been known as the Viper Room goes back over 100 years when it began as a grocery store called Young’s Market.
Young’s served the community from 1924-1942 and gave way to a series of short-lived nightclubs (The Cotton Club: 1946-1947, the Greenwich Village Inn: 1947-1949, The Blue Angel: 1949-1950, The Last Call: 1950-1951).
In 1951 it became The Melody Room, a jazz club which lasted through 1969 as the Strip slowly evolved from an anything goes oasis in an unincorporated section of LA into a hotspot for young people, especially hippies, who were packing the clubs and enjoying the protest music of the Buffalo Springfield, Them, and The Doors.
