Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, or Akon for short, has sold millions of records, broken several records, and has been a mainstay on the radio and in playlists for over 20 years.
Kicking off with his debut album in 2004, the Senegalese rapper had two singles in the top 10 of the charts. His second LP, Konvicted (2006) peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and had two singles receive Grammy nominations: “I Wanna Love You” (featuring Snoop Dogg) and “Smack That” (featuring Eminem).
Both of those songs reached #1 and #2 on the singles chart at the same time. The following year, “Don’t Matter” and his guest appearance on the title track of Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape also peaked at the top two spots, making him the first solo artist to occupy the top two positions on the chart at the same time on two separate occasions.
Besides his own projects, he’s been a featured guest on nearly 100 other tunes including hit singles with Wyclef, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and T-Pain.
