On Presidents Day of 1996, the wacky and talented Seattle trio, The Presidents of the United States of America, hauled their stripped down setup to Mount Rushmore to stand in the shadow of their namesakes and sing songs about felines and fruit.
Riding the unlikely wave of success from their self titled debut, the quirky lo-fi band boasted a bass with only two strings, a guitar with just three, and a drummer who wasn’t afraid to ride the cowbell.
Soon after signing with Columbia in 1995, their sweet, funny, simple pop songs that could rock when necessary, soared to #6 on the album chart, eventually going triple platinum.
Frontman Chris Ballew sang and played what he called a “basitar,” whose two higher strings had been yanked off, leaving him with just the E and A strings.
