Despite Spinal Tap not being in attendance, there was some big bottom last Thursday (1/22) at the Bass Magazine Awards in Santa Ana.
Primus hosted a short set which incorporated four guest bassists over five of their original hits in The Observatory behind the Orange Curtain.
Led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, who founded the band in 1984, Primus is also guitarist Larry LaLonde who joined in 1989, and the new guy, drummer John Hoffman who completed the trio in 2023.
After an opening salvo of “Groundhog’s Day” to warm up, tdhe fun got going with “Too Many Puppies,” off their Frizzle Fry (1990) album, which planted a flag for the band right in the heart of the college alternative era that Primus stood out in — primarily because of Claypool’s nimble bass lines and weird voice.
