Cautious Clay, born Joshua Karpeh, hails from Cleveland, Ohio, but when he moved to New York City after graduating college in DC, he quickly pivoted from day jobs into a full-time recording career.
His music journey began with classical flute training when he was only a lad and along the way was taught by an oddly famous teacher. The multi-instrumentalist who can also rock the saxophone, guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums, in addition to singing and producing, broke out with a pair of EPs in 2018 Blood Type and Resonance, followed by Table of Context in 2019.
It was the song “Cold War” from Blood Type that caught the ear of Miss Taylor Swift (or her producers) who interpolated elements of his song into what would become “London Boy” on her smash 2019 album Lover. She had only used a sample from one other artist before him, Right Said Fred.
“Honestly, it’s a huge honor,” the then 26-year-old Clay told Rolling Stone. “I don’t even know, she never even shouted me out, I don’t know anything about her, really, so, to me, that she would feel it was appropriate to include that interpolation is just pretty surreal.”
