Like many things in Southern California, Pioneertown started as a movie set, except this was in the high desert, about an hour drive from where Coachella is held.
Back in the day, though, it was a place where Roy Rogers and his peers could shoot a Western and then grab a meal without leaving the street.
Out of those humble beginnings came a roadhouse that locals first knew as The Cantina, then as a down-low hideout for bikers, outlaws, and ranch hands.
In 1982, Harriet and Claude “Pappy” Allen put their names on the door and their family recipes on the grill, turning the film prop into a cozy clubhouse where bands and troubadours could plug in and enjoy the quirky Old West vibes of Joshua Tree.
