The 9:30 Club, arguably Washington, D.C.’s most important rock venue, opened on May 31, 1980, at 930 F Street NW, which is how it got its name.
Founded by entrepreneurs Dody DiSanto and Jon Bowers, the 199-capacity club—with its low ceilings and intimate vibe—quickly became the place for underground and alternative acts to play in the nation’s capital, helping D.C. become a hotbed for punk and new wave for those unwilling to brave New York City.
Local acts like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Scream, and Government Issue cut their teeth on its tiny stage before taking on the world.
Meanwhile, national soon-to-be legends including Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, The Replacements, and the Ramones also came through the club, delivering the hard, fast, and loud pummelling the kids demanded.
