Our Lady Peace, the Toronto post-grunge band currently on their 30th anniversary tour, surprised their crowd at the Saddledome on Wednesday (2/19) by playing an oldie with a dark past.
After the 10th tune in their 17-song set, singer Raine Maida cushioned the sold-out audience before breaking into “Whatever,” a tune from their debut album that had been used as the theme song for the popular profession wrestler Chris Benoit.
Benoit was an extremely talented and beloved star of the WWE who shocked the world in 2007 when he killed his wife and young son before taking his own life. OLP quickly announced they’d never play the song again as it had become so tied to Benoit.
Last week in Calgary, 22 years after they had performed it live, Maida told their fans it was time for them to put the song back in the set.
