At some point everyone feels like they’ve got a bit of the Imposter Syndrome. Even when we’re first riding a bike, we have to pretend we know what we’re doing and we have to go through the motions to get the thing moving forward. The bike might wiggle and zig-zag and falter, but at some point we’re going.
Musicians often have the same trajectory of going from covering their favorite artist’s songs until they find their own unique voice and style.
On Halsey’s new LP, her fifth studio offering, she embraces that little voice telling her, “you’re ripping off this person and that one. You’re so not original.” And even called the record The Great Impersonator.
Her influences are clearer than ever but that’s not what makes it great. It’s great because her lyrics are all hers. They are extremely personal, sometimes a bit too TMI, sometimes slightly more dark than pop songs are written. And you know what: good.
