The Hollywood Palladium opened on Halloween night, 1940, with two giants in music: Tommy Dorsey with vocalist Frank Sinatra.
Since then the list of huge artists have never stopped performing at the legendary concert hall on Sunset Blvd. near Vine.
The art deco Hollywood mainstay was built by LA Times publisher Norman Chandler who put up $1.6 million (equivalent to $36 million today) to create the venue that holds 4,000 ticket holders, most of whom stand for the shows there.
Chandler was a graduate of the nearby Hollywood High, and helped refurbish the Hollywood Bowl along with his wife Dorothy in 1951 when the Bowl was met with major financial issues. Together they also built the Los Angeles Music Center which includes the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre.
