It was not a runaway train that brought Soul Asylum to the inaugural Minnesota music festival on the shores of the mighty Mississippi. Nor was it a Chevy van.
“I arrived to the gig in my yacht,” founding member Dave Pirner joked to the crowd on Saturday, June 20.
Many in the audience – if the are of a certain age – watched the local legends’ rise from their early days on the Minnesota indie label Twin-Tone, to their glory days on A&M, but knew this was not a band who’d blow their wad on blinged-out schooners.
That sort of midwest sarcasm led to the name of the festival, the Minnesota Yacht Club…. even though none of the headliners (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gwen Stefani, Black Crowes, Alanis Morrisette) are from the Twin Cities.
