Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” record-setting streak for most consecutive weeks at #1 ended in August of 2019.
For nineteen straight weeks the song Montero Lamar Hill aka Lil Nas X created by rapping over a $30 sample he bought off a Nine Inch Nails snippet added to an 808 drum beat, captured the imagination of the world, and prompted the debate as to what exactly is country music.
Billboard magazine, the one whose charts Nas X disrupted, refused to put the 21-year-old flamboyant star on their cover for the entirety of the song’s run, in part, because they were embarrassed after they quietly pulled the original version of the track off the country chart it had surprisingly debuted at #24 on.
When a remix of the song was quickly created to include Billy Ray Cyrus and elongate the diddy, the monster hit became a genuine crossover smash.
