Lauper’s first album, She’s So Unusual (1983), was such a smash hit, it made her the first female artist to achieve four Top 5 singles from a debut album.
As iconic as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” is and was, it only made it to #2. “She Bop” caused a stir in the ’80s when it was discovered the tune was about pleasing one’s self and peaked at #3. The momentum of the album helped catapult “All Through the Night” to #4.
It was the sweet “Time After Time,” that was the only #1 single off the pop album which helped Cyndi earn the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1985.
Often winning Best New Artist is the kiss of death. Not literally, thankfully, but rarely does it help an artist’s career.
