“Mister I ain’t a boy, no I’m a man, and I believe in a promised land.”
For generations, Altadena, California, was a promise land for a diverse collection of middle class families, artists and musicians, who couldn’t afford the tony real estate of nearby Pasadena and created a rich community in the unincorporated foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County.
Tragedy struck last January when a fire broke out in those foothills and record-breaking winds quickly spread the blaze of the Eaton Fire that led to the destruction of over 9,000 structures in Altadena and surrounding communities. Several thousand others were forced to leave for extended periods of time due to toxic smoke damage in the area.
Of those whose homes were either destroyed or endured intense smoke damage were Art Alexakis (Everclear), Steve Coulter (The Brothers Steve), Tim Darcy (Cola), Justin Fisher (Psoma), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Brandon Jay (Gwendolyn and the Good Time Gang), John Carroll Kirby (solo artist and collaborator for acts like Solange), JMDL Moore (jazz and hip-hop drummer-producer known for work with The Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship), Tony Obi (Fat Tony), Gwendolyn Sanford (Gwendolyn and the Good Time Gang), Carroll Santa Cruz (Kelly Rowland collaborator and TV/film composer), Simmons-Santa Cruz (TV/film composer), Jeff Solomon (The Brothers Steve), and Jake Viator (Stones Throw–affiliated engineer), among others.
