Green Day surprised fans at the Festival d’été de Québec Sunday night, June 16, when they debuted a catchy new song, “1981.”
The upbeat no-nonsense pop punk whose chorus seems to say, “she’s gonna bang her head like 1981” was introduced after the trio played “Minority” (which is 23 years old now).
Near the end of the two minute tune, a now-bleach blonde Billie Joe, wearing a black shirt and red tie, yelled “let’s go crazy,” and after the song ended the band broke into an Operation Ivy cover.
“1981” would join an interesting collection of Green Day songs that include numbers.
In order of most-played by the Berkeley rockers there is “2000 Light Years Away” from Kerplunk!, “21 Guns” from 21st Century Breakdown, “21st Century Breakdown” from that LP, “16” from Dookie, “99 Revolutions,” from ¡Tré!, “409 in Your Coffeemaker,” off the Slappy EP, “86” from Insomniac, the title track of the 1000 Hours EP, and “80” from Kerplunk!
