On August 11, 1973, Kool Herc performing in the Bronx for his sister’s party, connected two turntables together in such a way that he created hip-hop music.
Unlike most musical origin stories, this one is undisputed. From the date to the place to the person, history agrees hip-hop started 50 years ago at a small rec room of the apartment complex at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, thanks to the ingenuity of Clive Campbell.
But it was more than that. Clive’s sister, Cindy, was due to go back to school shortly and the party was a way to raise money to pay for new clothes and supplies.
Thus, just like the blues, rock, and country, hip-hop was a musical genre whose roots came from poor Americans using what little they had to make something new.
50 years later Yankee Stadium was determined to be the right place to hold an epic party of its own to celebrate what’s transpired since Clive played Cindy’s party. Here are a few of the highlights.
