Indigo Girls Resurge Thanks to Barbie

Indigo Girls Resurge Thanks to Barbie

The Indigo Girls are having quite a comeback due to the Barbie movie which features their 1989 hit “Closer I Am To Fine.”

Without spoiling the movie to those few of you yet to have seen it, Margot Robbie’s character, the Stereotypical Barbie, finds solace in the tune as it seems to speak to her independent spirit.

It was just a few years ago that Georgians Amy Ray and Emily Saliers were celebrating the song’s 30th anniversary that helped the women win the 1990 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

They would have won Best New Artist that year but the Recording Academy chose to give that one to Milli Vanilli of all duos.

It was writer/director Greta Gerwig herself who chose the sing-along anthem as Barbie’s slightly sarcastic theme song.

From Nirvana unplugging to Wu-Tang kicking the door in, this month has delivered an impressive pile of albums and plenty of ways to drown out Thanksgiving arguments. Here’s one for every day.
