Gym Class Heroes, the rap-rock and alternative hip-hop group from Geneva, New York, was formed in 1997 when Travie McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley met during high-school gym class. Later they added guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo and bassist Eric Roberts, and began blending live instruments with hip-hop beats.
Their first two albums, …For the Kids (2001), and The Papercut Chronicles (2005), led to their breakthrough LP, As Cruel as School Children (2006), which went gold and produced the #4 single with the Supertramp sample, “Cupid’s Chokehold.”
McCoy, as you probably know, is the frontman and primary vocalist of the group. During periods when the band was inactive, he launched a solo career, releasing the album Lazarus (2010), which featured the #4 single “Billionaire” with Bruno Mars.
He popped by the Setlist office to chat with Bree Wilde about the band getting back together, new material, and his first concert experience.
