The Liverpudlian trio, The Wombats, formed in the early 2000s after singer and guitarist Matthew Murphy met bassist Tord Øverland-Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis while studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).
Their breakthrough came with 2007’s A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation, and like the olympics follow-up LPs every four years from This Modern Glitch (2011) and Glitterbug (2015) helped grow their fanbase. It also didn’t hurt that singles “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” and “Greek Tragedy” were embraced by UK and US audiences.
TikTok helped propel “Greek Tragedy” several years after its release, going viral on TikTok in late 2020 and 2021, prompting a reissue and renewed radio interest.
That second wind introduced the band to a younger audience five years after the single originally dropped.
The current lineup remains Murphy, Knudsen, and Haggis, a rarity for a band that has operated at this level for so long.
