The Best New Artist Grammy is a cherished award for young musicians as they are quickly peers in an exclusive club that includes heavy hitters like The Beatles (1965), Mariah Carey (1991), Lauryn Hill (1999), Christina Aguilera (2000), Alicia Keys (2002), Kanye West (2005), Adele (2009), Billie Eilish (2020), Olivia Rodrigo (2022), and Chappell Roan (2025).
The award doesn’t guarantee success, nor does it eliminate the possibility of being a one-hit wonder like what happened with Starland Vocal Band (1977), A Taste of Honey (1979), and Milli Vanilli (1990, whose award was notoriously revoked).
For a variety of reasons, the Grammys expanded the nominees of the category from five finalists to eight in 2019. But that didn’t stop Olivia Dean from beating the talented pack and extending the run of female artists taking home the honor.
