Bobby Darin accomplished a feat in 1959 that will probably never be repeated again: he won the Grammy for Record of the Year at the same time the song was #1 on the charts.
“Mack The Knife,” a song written before Darin was born, by German legends Kurt Weill (music) and Bertolt Brecht (lyrics), and had been covered by plenty of others, was topping the charts for the teen idol at the same time the fledgling Grammys were holding their second awards ceremony ever – and first to be televised.
Because there wasn’t a lot of red tape and commotion, the votes, the results, and the broadcast all happened in such a timely way that the song that had only been released in August, could get nominated and win Record of the Year in November.
Ironic since Darin objected when his label, Atlantic, wanted to release it as a single.
