It’s been a herky-jerky start to Pavement’s second reunion tour, which kicked off 9/7 in San Diego, but it finally happened in a big way. The indie rock darlings delivered 26 songs in their career-spanning set that included a rarity they hadn’t rocked in 25 years.
Starting off with the decidedly somber “Grounded,” the Stockton quartet followed it up with a quirky b-side, that was never an important part of their set, but will probably now be a staple for the entire tour.
With lines like, “show me a word that rhymes with Pavement/And I won’t kill your parents/and roast them on a spit,” one could understand why the band, fronted by Stephen Malkmus never took “Harness Your Hopes” seriously.
But thanks to Spotify tweaking its autoplay algorithm a few years ago, the track that originally only appeared in a CD-only package quickly became Pavement’s most streamed song… dwarfing the plays of the entirety of their deep catalogue.
