Setlist History: Elvis Costello’s ’87 Royal Albert Hall Residency

Setlist History: Elvis Costello’s ’87 Royal Albert Hall Residency

Elvis Costello was a man possessed for much of the ’80s, but never moreso than in 1986 when he drastically changed course in his sound and dropped a pair of very different albums, King of America (in February ’86) and Blood & Chocolate (in September ’86).

The latter was the Englishman’s 11th album, thus his live shows were capable to contain any number of hits, deep cuts, and covers, which brought an added energy to each performance.

In five-night residencies in Los Angeles in October of ’86 and London in January ’87, Elvis prepared a different show for each night. A few nights he’d play a greatest hits show with The Attractions backing him, one night would be focused on King of America with The Confederates as his band, and the next Blood & Chocolate.

The most fortunate fans of those shows caught an early incarnation of his Spinning Songbook show where he’d spin a giant wheel and play whatever song the pointer landed on.
