In 2005, Faheem Rasheed Najm was 19 years-old and about to drastically change the course of his life under the moniker T-Pain.
Later that year “I’m Sprung,” would be released as the lead single from his debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, and skyrocket up the charts, peaking at #8.
Although a solid song, it had a gimmick: T-Pain sang with Auto-Tune, but not to correct sour notes. He used it as an artistic device, not a crutch.
Unfortunately it would take him years to convince audiences he really could sing without the effect. The best evidence was his October 29, 2014 appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk.
