The Tragically Hip walked onto the stage at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario, on August 20, 2016, for a concert Canadian music fans would not soon forget.
It was the final date of the band’s Man Machine Poem Tour. Although the group had not officially announced that it would be their farewell, most fans understood what was happening.
Beloved singer Gord Downie had been diagnosed with incurable glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in December 2015. He was just 51. His diagnosis was made public a few months later.
Downie was born in Amherstview, Ontario, just outside Kingston. He attended Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, where he met members of what would become The Tragically Hip in 1984.
