The Offspring began over 40 years ago in Garden Grove, California, originally as Manic Subsidal. Founding members and high school pals, Dexter Holland and Greg Kriesel, started playing music together when they met guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman and the chemistry gelled.
The band changed its name to The Offspring in 1986 and released their self-titled debut in 1989. After years of playing Southern California clubs, they signed with Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz’s Epitaph Records and things really got cooking.
Lightning struck in 1994 with the release of Smash, which produced the bangers “Come Out and Play,” “Self Esteem” and “Gotta Get Away.” The album peaked at #4 on Billboard and went on to move over 11 million units worldwide, making it the highest-selling album ever released by an independent label.
The band followed up with Ixnay on the Hombre and Americana, the latter producing more hits like “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)”—which opens with a sampled count-in from Def Leppard’s “Rock of Ages.”
