While many consider 1977 the year punk broke, The Sex Pistols were in the works for a few years before that. It was in 1975 that Malcolm McLaren put together Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and bassist Glen Matlock.
Their first year of really gigging began in ’76. Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious in 1977, despite not being any good at bass.
But it was November 26, 1976 that EMI released the iconic “Anarchy in the UK” single which changed punk, pop, and rock, and is the reason a slightly reformed Pistols will be touring this year to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The new lineup is Jones Cook, and Matlock, along with frontman Frank Carter – who was born 8 years after the single was released.
