The second, and final, official Taylor Hawkins tribute concert took place yesterday (September 27) at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Much like the first one in England, last night’s show in LA was a six-hour emotionally charged epic where members of his bands, as well as rock legends he admired, rocked out in front of a bittersweet audience.
Stewart Copeland, Miley Cyrus, Josh Homme, Joan Jett, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Brian May, Alanis Morissette, Mark Ronson, Nikki Sixx, Chad Smith, Roger Taylor, and Wolfgang Van Halen, were just some of the big names who joined the Foo Fighters to celebrate the life of the affable and talented drummer who died this year while on tour.
Mikael Wood of the LA Times reminded readers the Foos have had some milestones at the once-Fabulous, now Kia Forum.
In 2015 Dave Grohl rocked the 17,000 capacity arena from his Game of Thrones-style chair after he broke his leg in Gothenburg, Sweden. That show included two Janes Addiction’s covers with Perry Farrell, as well as a duet with guitar slinger Gary Clark.
Wood wrote that Grohl said Taylor Hawkins talked about seeing Boston at the Forum in 1986, but the drummer probably meant ’87 when the classic rock heroes played three nights in support of the eagerly awaited Third Stage album. The Forum was also the first place guitarist Pat Smear saw an arena rock concert: The Rolling Stones in 1972 for the Exile on Main St. tour with Stevie Wonder opening.
While the general outline of the show was the same (hours of honored guests playing a few tunes followed by the Foo Fighters doing a full set), some of the guests and lineups were new. Here are some highlights:
