Rush kicked off their Fifty Something Tour on Sunday (6/7) in the same venue, the Fabulous Forum, where they played their last show with their now-departed drummer and songwriter, Neil Peart, 11 years ago.
The show was a both a welcome return to the stage by bassist/singer Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson, both of whom have been with the Canadian band since the late ’60s and have appeared on every Rush album.
It was also the grand debut of its new drummer, Anika Nilles, who accepted the toughest assignment in rock history: sitting on the throne of greatness in an attempt to fill in for one of the most legendary musicians ever and play his intricate catalogue.
One reason fans have flocked to Rush over the years is the way the trio have been able to merge complex classic rock with prog and then push it in new directions.
