Cardi B proved she was up to the last minute challenge when took the stage at Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Saturday (9/27), stepping in as the surprise headliner after The Weeknd withdrew earlier in the week.
Delivering the crowd of 60k on the Great Lawn a mini set that included “Bodak Yellow,” “I Like It,” “Outside,” as well as the live debut of “ErrTime,” Cardi was hilarious and outrageous as many fans got to see for the first time a pregnant woman twerking.
The Weeknd explained his absence on Wednesday via social media.
“I regret to share that, due to personal reasons, I am unable to perform at Global Citizen. Thank you to my fans for taking action with them, as I believe in their mission deeply,” he wrote to his tens of millions of followers. “Thank you for your understanding and support.”
Organizers quickly replaced him with NY native Cardi B who responded with her own statement.
“Central Park, I’m coming for you!!! I can’t wait to be home in New York, and to bring my new songs and all the DRAMA to the Global Citizen Festival,” she wrote, signing off with, “Let’s get it!!!”
One reason Ms. Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar probably accepted the challenged was because her new album Am I the Drama? was scheduled to be released on Friday (9/19) on Atlantic Records, and the giant gig aimed to bring attention to fight poverty and climate change would take place the next day.
