The title seems to be in tribute of and inspired by founding member Andy Fletcher's death in May, but DM's lead songsmith, Martin Gore, says the phrase was always in the works.“It sounds very morbid, but I think you can look at it very positively as well,” Gore explained in a German press conference this week regarding the title which means an object that’s kept as a reminder of the inevitability of death.
