The last song Tom Petty ever played live with his Heartbreakers 11 years ago at the Hollywood Bowl was "American Girl," the upbeat romantic anthem that was released 50 years ago from the band’s self-titled debut album.
It was fitting that it was the first of a trio of songs country star Chris Stapleton performed with the remaining members of The Heartbreakers at the Americana Awards at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
Stapleton along with Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, Steve Ferrone, Scott Thurston and Ron Blair accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday (9/17) on behalf of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and proceeded to blaze through "American Girl," "Breakdown" and "You Wreck Me."
