Ed Sheeran opened his Loop Tour on Friday (1/16) with a marathon solo performance at Go Media Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, a venue that holds roughly 50,000 people in concert configuration.
The outdoor stadium is the longtime home of the New Zealand Warriors, who play there during the National Rugby League season, and it regularly hosts international rugby league tests as well as concerts such as this one by the Grammy-winner.
In the past the stadium, which has gone through many name changes over the years, hosted the legendary Rainbow Warrior Benefit Concert in 1986 when it was the Mount Smart Stadium, two of Michael Jackson’s HIStory Tour shows in ’96 when it was Ericsson Stadium, and it was the only stop Taylor Swift rocked in New Zealand on the 2018 Reputation Tour when the name reverted back to Mount Smart.
The pair of Auckland gigs were the first of 17 shows he will treat Oceania with, followed by one in Wellington, two in Christchurch, two in Perth, three in Sydney, three in Brisbane, and four in Melbourne.
