Paul Simon and Edie Brickell have been in a personal and musical partnership for more than three decades. Brickell made her splash in the late ’80s as the adorable hippyish singer of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, whose 1988 hit “What I Am” was a delightful respite from the maddening mush on MTV.
Simon and Brickell met during that time, developed a relationship, got hitched in May of 1992, and have remained together ever since, raising a family while continuing their individual creative careers.
Over the years, Simon and Brickell have frequently collaborated musically. They co-wrote songs for the Grammy-winning Broadway musical Bright Star, which premiered in 2016. Brickell has appeared on several of Simon’s recordings, most recently on “The Sacred Harp” and “Wait” from 2023’s spiritual Seven Psalms.
Simon’s Hollywood Bowl show on Sunday (6/7) was a fairly typical stop for the 84-year-old singer/songwriter on his A Quiet Celebration Tour, but there were a few exceptions.
