Rilo Kiley, the lovable LA band fronted by vocalist Jenny Lewis and guitarist Blake Sennett – both former child actors – is back and kicked off their newest tour in years Monday (5/5) in the sleepy beachside town of San Luis Obispo.
Formed way back in 1998, Rilo Kiley were indie with a smidge of alt-country but not in a gross way. Hardly there at all. Sorta like when you’d ask your mom if there were any onions in the soup “so few you can barely taste them, Junior.”
As the early 2000s blossomed into their own thing and RK dropped their debut album Take-Offs and Landings in 2001, LA found itself with a shiny new indie darling whose music could be “devastatingly sad and exceedingly invigorating at the same time,” as Stereogum recalled a few years ago.
Having them back after 17 years is cause for a celebration, even if it’s not forever. Is anything forever?
