Sam Fender, after opening for Bruce Springsteen in Italy, returned home for two sold out gigs that were an entire weekend of revelry highlighted with special guests.
Fender, the rags to riches British phenom, with #1 UK releases on each of his two albums, sold out the 50,000 seat soccer stadium at St James’ Park both nights. The award-winning singer-songwriter who grew up about 20 minutes from the stadium played almost identical crowd-pleasing sets except for Saturday night when he added two AC/DC covers.
“Back in Black” and “Shook Me All Night Long” would rock any revved up party, but Fender added it to the set to accommodate his special guest, AC/DC singer Brian Johnson.
The blitzed Geordies, most of whom were donning the black and white colors of the Newcastle soccer club lost their minds, as Johnson is not only from the area, but was singing for the band Geordie when he got the call from the hard rock legends in 1980 to see if he would be interested in auditioning.
