William Martin “Billy” Joel was born on this day 75 years ago in the Bronx, New York.
He has had such an unlikely and successful career since he broke out in the 1970s, it is right to honor him on his diamond jubilee.
But instead of starting in 1971 when his first album, Cold Harbor, came out, paving the way for Piano Man in ’73, let’s sit in awe of what he has been doing live in concert recently and how impossible it seems on paper.
People outside of New York City might not realize this, but for over a decade, Billy Joel has been routinely and regularly putting butts into Madison Square Garden‘s 19,500 seats. Since January 2014, every month, Joel has commanded one of the most incredible residencies.
