A rock star in every way, Robert Johnson, legendarily known as the poor Black man who sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads to become a guitar hero, was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, on May 8, 1911.
His life, like his tragic death at just 27, is clouded by mystery, myth, folklore, and foolishness.
Despite being poor and relatively unsuccessful, Johnson left behind 29 recorded songs whose music and style influenced the greatest of bluesmen and rockers alike.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame said he “may be the first ever rock star.”
