While many in Los Angeles hunkered down as the city of angels experienced record-setting rainfall, the show went on at the KIA Forum in Inglewood as The Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined iHeartRadio’s annual ALTer EGO festival.
With Fall Out Boy as the night’s opener, even jaded Angelenos braved the flooded streets and sloppy freeways to get there on time, Saturday night, January 14th. Fans were then blessed with abbreviated sets by Beach Weather, CHVRCHES, Muse, Phoenix, Rosa Linn, and Jack White.
And being LA, the joint was star-studded. Even Jared Leto made a quick appearance to the delight of one and all.
Then hometown heroes the Chili Peppers jumped on stage for a 10-song set that consisted of tunes mostly from their 2022 double albums Return of the Dream Canteen and Unlimited Love. Clearly the veteran band was looking at this radio-sponsored event as a warm-up for their forthcoming 2023 world tour.
And despite “Under the Bridge”, “Soul to Squeeze”, and “Eddie” being on the setlist that the band tweeted out, those hits didn’t see the light of day. Instead singer Anthony Keidis provided witty banter and memories of sneaking into that same Forum decades ago as a youngster to catch The Who.
The band live-debuted three tunes from Dream Canteen: “Fake as Fu@k,” “The Drummer,” and “Tippa My Tongue,” which critics said sounded much better live than on the record. Not the first time the band has heard that backhanded compliment.
