Perhaps to some looking at it now, U2’s performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on June 5, 1983, might not seem like much.
None of the band looks like the rock stars they’d become, the typically beautiful outdoor Colorado music venue across as dreary and damp, and due to the inclement weather rows of empty seats are plainly visible.
Their label’s desire to get a live U2 concert video in the can and available to outlets like MTV was so important, a second gig the next night was booked in nearby Boulder incase the Red Rocks show was rained out.
Despite the rain, or maybe because of it, what was captured was as dramatic and as intense as the subject matter of Bono’s lyrics. And the show and videos that captured that performance catapulted the Irish quartet into becoming one of the biggest bands in history.
