On Thursday, Millions of Americans learned the singer whose song has been on top of the charts is a Black man with long dreads.
Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” outpaced superstars from Taylor Swift to Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish by being #1 on the singles chart for 20 non-consecutive weeks this year.
It didn’t have the cultural buzz of “Not Like Us” or an enormous Eras Tour to help lift it up, nor was the summer named after it. But on Thanksgiving morning it reached tens of millions of Americans who were prepping their turkey dinners while watching an unexpectedly exciting football game.
The 28-year-old singer born Collins Obinna Chibueze is a Virginian of Nigerian descent. For those familiar with the song and unfamiliar with the singer, his three-song halftime appearance surprised many.
