On September 27, 1997, Pope John Paul II was the special guest star for a Catholic get-together in Bologna, Italy, where hundreds of thousands of young church members were in attendance to celebrate their faith, and also the music that binds them.
Taking the stage that night for the pope (who sat in a protected viewing perch on stage left) were performers like The Harlem Gospel Singers, opera legend Andrea Bocelli, and the voice of a generation: Bob Dylan.
Candice Hughes of the Associated Press wrote, “it’s the stuff of which legends are made: The rebel who’s been knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door meeting the man with the keys to the kingdom.”
Hughes wrote the audience was 200,000, but her rivals at the UPI claimed it was closer to 400,000.
