Led Zeppelin’s American swan song began with their manager’s son being slapped backstage and ended with the tragic death of their singer’s child.
Never mind the historic breakthroughs happening in punk rock in NY and London, in 1977 there was no bigger rock group than Led Zeppelin and on July 24, they were headlining the second of two sold out shows at the giant football stadium in Northern California.
The Day on the Green was a trailblazing festival that ran for two decades at Oakland Alameda Coliseum. The show was produced by the legendary Bay Area promoter Bill Graham who had booked the British rockers in 1973 for the predecessor of the event, Dancing on the Outdoor Green, which was held in San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium.
Zeppelin had been scheduled to play the ’75 Day on the Green but after singer Robert Plant and his family were involved in a car crash in early August while on vacation in Greece, the ’75 US Tour was canceled.
